Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays to all of our friends and family! This Christmas has been a little different as it was just the kids and me. Typically we spend Christmas Eve with my parents, my brother and his family, and my sister. This left the cooking and planning to me... I know so scary ;) We had a wonderful dinner Christmas Eve (if I do say so myself) and even better conversation. Life has kept us so busy, it was nice to just sit and relax and enjoy one another. Drew asked Carter if he knew who was coming to our house that night. Carter responded with a "huh?" and Drew told him Santa Clause was coming. Carter then said "That is sooooo awesome!" It was such a funny moment, Carter seems to learn new words everyday. After dinner, the snow really started to come down and the kids decided to build a snowman. They had such a blast! Eventually a snowball fight ensued and the building of "Fort Taylor" began. I had to drag them in around 10 to save our neighbors from all of the noise :) We are looking forward to celebrating the season with the rest of the family this Saturday. What could be better than celebrating such a beautiful time of year twice? :) We wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas! Peace to All- Colleen and Family

The Honorable Judge Greenwood!

Congratulations to my dad who was appointed as District 4 Judge in Boise! He received a phone call from Govenor Otter on Wednesday with the exciting news. We are all sooo proud of him! I got the call from my dad while I was finishing up last minute Christmas shopping in Walmart. I did a little dance right there in the isle and I think its possible I might have jumped up and down as well :) This is such wonderful news in so many ways. It means goodbye to the harsh world of self employment and the best part- my parents are moving to Boise!! My dad has all of the qualites needed to be an incredible Judge- he is fair, kind, full of great advice (I would not be where I am today if not for his words of wisdom), and a strong set of values. Congrats again dad! Love-Colleen

A Day of Thanks

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. There is just something so special about preparing a meal with family and spending the day together. Thanksgiving day, much like Halloween, was just beautiful. We joked with my dad that he could be out golfing :) We took sometime before our dinner to take a few family pictures. As usual, mom and dad pulled off a fabulous meal and we all ate way too much! I have so much to be thankful for and enjoyed the weekend with family to reflect on the important things in life.

Belated Halloween

Well I guess it is a good thing the New Year isn't here just yet because I would have already failed to meet my goal.... I have been so far behind on blogging and I will really try to get better :/ I'm actually a little embarrassed to post Halloween pictures in December, but there are some really cute ones I wanted to share. We spent Halloween with Ben's family along with Beth and Nick and could not have asked for a nicer evening. I honestly cannot remember a Halloween where a coat and mittens were not a necessity. Carter wasn't sure about this whole "Halloween thing" until he realized candy was involved :) I made my traditional Halloween meal-chilli- and Melissa and the girls treated us all to pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. They were the perfect topper the night.

Searching for the Perfect Pumpkin

Again, I am soo behind on blogging! Life just seems to fly by these days :) Kate, Drew, Hannah, Carter and I went to a local pumkin patch a few days before Halloween. Although the older kids have been to a pumpkin patch before, this was the first time for Carter and me. It definitely felt like Fall outside but the sun was shining and we were in search for the perfect pumpkin. When you arrive, there is a flatbed with hay bails transformed into seating, pulled by a tractor, that takes you out into a large field full of pumpkins. Carter tried to pick up any and every pumpkin he could find until he found one just his size! A little while later, the other kiddos had found their perfect pumpkin as well :) We had such a fun time and what a perfect way to celebrate Fall.

Taylor- My Magic Ninja :)

Over the past month, I have been doing posts about each of my kiddos. I havn't posted an update on Taylor as of yet because I was hoping to get some new photos of him before hand. It has come to my attention however, via the "family gravevine" that I am long overdue on filling everyone in on the life of Taylor as a teenager. As you can imagine, he is extremely busy and the last thing he wants to do is stop so mom can take some corny pictures :). Taylor is now in his junior year of high school and we have started scouting out colleges. I am sooo proud to say that he still maintains a 4.0 GPA as well as being involved with wrestling, track, and an Acapella group. He is such a neat kid, so neat in fact that I’m shocked he is actually my child :) Life has been a roller coaster for him I’m sure (due to no fault of his own) but he has handled it all in stride with such maturity. He takes his role as the oldest sibling very seriously and sets an excellent example. I love his sense of humor and how he can make anything entertaining and enjoyable. There are so many qualities in Taylor that I wish I had… his relentless dedication to anything he does, his ability to form his own opinions without taking the “popular route”, his laid back nature… just to name a few :) Happy 17th Birthday honey! I am sooo proud of you and all of your accomplishments! I am incredibly blessed to have you. Thank you for being my Magic Ninja:)

May we all be Coffee...

My mom passed along this little story to me when things were definitely at a rocky point in my life.. maybe this explains my love affair with coffee as well :)

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, 'Tell me what you see.'
'Carrots, eggs, and coffee,' she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, 'What does it mean, mother?’ Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
'Which are you?' she asked her daughter. 'When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
You might want to send this message to those people who mean something to you (I JUST DID); to those who have touched your life in one way or another; to those who make you smile when you really need it; to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down; to those whose friendship you appreciate; to those who are so meaningful in your life.

May we all be COFFEE!!!!!!!

Hannah Banana

There are days when I just can't believe how mature and grown up my kiddos are getting. Hannah has definitely changed tremendously over the past year in many ways. She is finally getting some height on her and is all legs lately. :) It has been quite the challenge to find pants that fit her length yet still stay up around her little waist. Most importantly however, I am so proud of the little lady she is turning into. Hannah has one of the sweetest souls I have ever met. She is giving, kind, and loving. The world through her eyes is sunshine and rainbows (I hope she always sees things this way). This summer she parted with her beloved long hair by donating 12 inches to the "Locks of Love". She called me and asked permission to do this and before I could even respond, she went on to tell me how important it was to her to be able to help a child with Cancer. She continued on about how kiddos who have Cancer need chemotherapy and she wondered if I knew that this treatment meant they would lose all their hair. "Isn't that so sad mommy?" It honestly brought me to tears to hear the compassion in her voice and how someone at the modest age of ten could be so selfless. Despite really not being sure about becoming a big sister initially, she has embraced this role completely. She is so patient and nurturing to Carter and he is her little shadow. Her other loves include anything to do with penguins, jobies, shopping, or fashion... quite the combination ;) Thank you, my little Hannah Banana, for reminding me each and every day of the simple joys in life. - Love Mom

Starbucks loves me and my mug..

Work has been crazy lately... the last few weeks I have been pulling 50 plus hours and my starbucks addiction has definitely increased! I've been trying very hard to "wean" myself off of this habit, but it is near impossible for me lately :) For some reason, a nice hot cup of coffee makes everything in the world better! I think my first clue that this starbucks thing was getting out of control, was when the barista in the drive through recognized my voice and knew exactly what I wanted... still trying to figure out how I'll survive in Aruba without my daily dose of latte. Is it possible that sandy beaches and romantic sunsets might do the trick? ;)

Carter- aka My Little Man

So I think after this post, I will finally be caught up on my blogging! I thought I would take a little time to share about my little man, Carter. It is so hard for me to believe that in just a few short months he will be three. When we were at my parents this past weekend, Carter discovered a tractor in Grandpa's yard! This tractor has definitely seen better days but my dad still manages to accomplish what he needs to. It actually belongs to a dear family friend who is kind enough to let my dad borrow it and bring back childhood memories of his growing up on a farm. Carter has a bit of his Grandpa in him evidently because he was mesmorized by this tractor and it wasn't easy getting him off of it! Lately, he has been practicing his inner rockstar by playing "rockband" on the xbox with Taylor and Drew. He can resite many of the songs at any given moment and can make a musical instrument out of just about anything. As you can imagine, being the youngest of five, siblings are always trying to teach him new things. Some are great.. and some I raise an eyebrow to (oh teenagers). One of his favorite sayings is "Thats Cool" in reference to almost anything he finds unique or entertaining. At this age, it seems like he is always picking up some new catch phrase. Carter loves all balls- footballs, basketballs, soccer balls- you name it. He can keep himself entertained playing basketball with his brothers for hours and keep his mom running in circles just to keep up with him :). We havn't started in on the potty training just yet but I plan on making that a goal over the next month, I will keep you posted on our progress. Any suggestions are welcomed as it has been years since I've potty trained a kiddo and I'm sure there are new tricks to the trade out there :). Time really does fly by and I wish there was a way to make the world slow down just a little so I can savor these moments a little longer.

Labor Day Part III- Fun at the Fair

I started a tradition with the kiddos after moving to Boise, every Labor Day Weekend we go to Grandma and Grandpa's and spend a day at the Twin Falls County Fair. This has always been a favorite childhood memory of mine that my parents started years ago so it is fun to pass it along to my children. Mother Nature gave us another weather scare. The forecast was very dismal... wind and rain. Not the weather one hopes for when planning a day at the fair. But yet again, Mother Nature pulled through! The day was perfect! A slight breeze during the day but the sun was shining and no rain, so off we went! Of course as soon as we arrived, the kids were anxious to get started on the rides. Grandma, Grandpa, Ben, Melissa, Macee, and Jayden came out to share in all of the fun too. Hannah was thrilled to discover she was finally tall enough to ride the Zipper! This has been her goal for the past few years and much to her dismay she has always been to short, so this was a huge deal :). The kids paired up to do the "big rides" while Melissa, Ben, and I took Jayden and Carter to the little kiddo rides. Carter was not a fan of the fair rides last year so I was anxious to see how things would go this year. He did much better this year (I think having Jayden there to offer some security helped) but was still not giving away smiles like he normally does. As the day progressed, it was apparent He was not feeling well and definitely coming down with some sort of bug. He was a trooper though and even made it through the petting zoo despite being sick. Jayden was hysterical in the petting zoo. They have small cups of grain for sale that you can feed the animals with. She would fill up her little hand, reach out to the baby goats, and giggle while they licked her fingers. We did something a little different this year, and went to some of the stage performances. The first was a magic act and all of my kiddos (except Carter) were picked out of the audience to participate in various ways. They had a blast and the show was so neat! The second was a hypnotist and Melissa was picked to go on stage with 12 other people from the audience. It was extremely entertaining! I've seen these type of shows before, but it is so different when you have personal ties to someone on stage. The group was hypnotized for about an hour and the hypnotist had them thinking they were cowboys and cowgirls from the wild west! Melissa didn't remember much at all but luckily she had all of us to reinact it all for her :). The weather started to turn on us a bit, the winds picked up and the tempeatures dropped signficantly so the kids headed out for a final ride before we all headed back to Grandma and Grandpa's. It was a great day and what a blessing to be able to spend an enjoyable weekend with family.
